OpenAI Merges ChatGPT and Codex Into a Single Plan

OpenAI Merges ChatGPT and Codex Into a Single Plan

If you pay for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Business — and you also use Codex — your subscription is about to work differently. Starting in December, OpenAI will fold ChatGPT and Codex into a single shared usage allowance, measured in tokens instead of message counts. Two buckets become one pool.

The change came via a help-center document, not a big launch event. But for anyone who splits their day between chatting and coding, it matters.

What is actually changing

Today, chatbot conversations and coding sessions are metered independently. From December, Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers get one combined allowance across both products. Everything you do in ChatGPT’s agent features and in Codex — through ChatGPT, your code editor, or the terminal — draws from the same pool.

OpenAI links the change to product consolidation: it’s bringing the agentic capabilities of ChatGPT Work into the main ChatGPT experience, and a single meter follows naturally. Codex chief Thibault Sottiaux had signaled the move was coming, and sharp-eyed users spotted a checkout notice about it on October 30.

What’s exempt — and what burns fastest

Not everything counts against the pool. Instant chat — the fast-reply mode for quick questions — is excluded and won’t consume your shared allowance. But advanced models and complex tasks take a bigger bite, so heavy Codex sessions will now eat into the same budget as your regular chats.

You’ll be able to track the combined balance and reset times under Settings, then Usage. When the pool runs dry, the options are familiar: wait for a reset, upgrade your plan, or buy credits.

The backstory: a rough few weeks

This didn’t come out of nowhere. OpenAI has been adjusting allowances all autumn — on October 29 it doubled Work and Codex limits on the Pro 100, 200, and 500 plans plus Business Premium, scrapping a planned cut to the Pro 200 tier that had angered subscribers. The shared pool is the next step in the same story: not a change to how much you get, but to how what you get is counted.

What OpenAI hasn’t said

Two honest unknowns. First, the exact December date — OpenAI has said “December,” not a day, so don’t trust any post claiming a specific launch day. Second, the per-plan allowance amounts. Nobody outside OpenAI knows how big each shared pool will be, so nobody can honestly tell you whether your plan gets effectively bigger or smaller.

Until those details land, the practical move is simple: check Settings → Usage in December, keep heavy runs deliberate, and don’t let anyone sell you a number that doesn’t exist yet.
