iPhone Duo Screens Are Cracking: What Owners Report and What Apple Says

Apple’s first foldable phone has a problem, and it’s showing up fast. The iPhone Duo went on sale October 23, 2026 — and within days, owners in Australia, the US, Canada, China, and India started posting the same alarming photos: the inner display cracked along the center fold, often with a bright band of white pixels running across the screen. Some units failed within hours of unboxing. Here’s everything owners are reporting, what Apple has actually said, and what to do if it happens to you.

What Owners Are Reporting

The pattern is strikingly consistent. The crack appears along the crease where the phone folds, and it’s usually accompanied by bright lines of pixels — sometimes a thin line running from the fold toward one side, sometimes an L-shaped mark. Owners stress that the damage sits underneath: the surface can look and feel fine while the panel below has already failed.

The failures are happening shockingly early. Shane Basinski of Melbourne, Australia, told the Wall Street Journal his Duo broke after about six hours of ownership and fewer than 20 openings — he heard a “loud audible crack” while showing the phone to a friend. Jesse Dalton, near Dallas, had opened his $2,000 phone just four or five times when the hinge stuck at a 45-degree angle; he pushed past the resistance, heard a loud pop, and bright lines appeared along the crease and across one side of the screen. A Reddit user in Australia reported the same after roughly six hours. Bloomberg independently verified the issue with half a dozen affected customers.

What Apple Says

Apple acknowledged the problem on Monday, October 26, with a statement sent to multiple outlets: “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”

That wasn’t the end of it. This week, Apple sent an internal memo to its stores and authorized service providers — obtained by MacRumors — with guidance on diagnosing the issue: technicians should inspect the device and repair or replace it under standard procedures. According to the memo, most Duo units are not susceptible, and affected units tend to show the defect quickly after use begins.

What Apple has not done: it hasn’t announced a recall, hasn’t launched a public repair program, and hasn’t commented on the underlying cause.

What Might Be Causing It

Nobody outside Apple knows for sure, but the leading theory comes from iFixit’s teardown. The repair site found a hinge mechanism sitting just off-center — uncomfortably close to where the bright lines appear. iFixit lead technician Shahram Mokhtari theorizes that a weak point in the hinge could damage the “microscopically small” electronics beneath the display, severing critical circuits. Trapped debris or a manufacturing defect in the hinge could do the same damage.

There’s supporting evidence for the debris angle: JerryRigEverything found dust inside his unit despite the phone’s IP68 rating. And Francisco Jeronimo, IDC’s vice president of worldwide devices, told the WSJ that the consistency of the failures “points to a possible sensitivity in the hinge tolerances or in how the display is supported during the fold.”

One useful technical note from iFixit: a bright line tells you the display has malfunctioned, but it doesn’t by itself reveal the cause. With a folding product, the whole mechanical system — display layers, support, hinge movement, clearances, assembly tolerances — has to be examined together.

The Torture Tests Tell Their Own Story

While owners report early failures, stress-testers are pushing the Duo to its limits. CNET has had an iPhone Duo folding on an industrial machine since launch day: it passed 121,000 folds by October 30, though a deepened crease appeared around 60,000. YouTuber Kuba Klawiter folded one by hand on a livestream until fold 75,001, when a line formed down the middle of the inner screen.

For context, Samsung officially rates its latest Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold devices for 500,000 folds. Apple, notably, never disclosed a fold rating for the Duo at all.

What To Do If Your Duo Cracks

If you see bright lines or a crack along the fold, contact AppleCare — through the Apple Support app, by phone, or at an Apple Store — and use Apple’s own words: the company says it’s aware of the issue and affected users should contact AppleCare for a replacement. You don’t need AppleCare+ for this; 9to5Mac confirms no separate plan is required for a replacement tied to the defect.

One warning: some carrier-store buyers have reportedly been told their crack looks like drop damage and quoted a repair instead. If that happens, ask for the case to be reviewed against Apple’s October 26 statement, and show photos proving there’s no external damage. The difference matters — an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair is listed at $999, roughly half the phone’s price.

Two more practical notes. Buyers who ordered on October 23 are still inside Apple’s 14-day return window (through November 6), so a refund and fresh order is a legitimate fallback. And expect to wait: Duo supply is tight enough that new pre-orders have slipped to late January, and replacement units come from the same pool.
