Google AI Mode Is Putting Links Higher: What It Means for Readers and Small Sites

Google announced on October 15, 2026 that links to websites and articles will show up more often and higher up in its AI-powered search results. That sounds like a small layout change. For readers and for small sites, it could change how often a search answer turns into an actual visit.
What actually changed
Google’s AI Overviews, launched in May 2024, give a generated summary instead of only a list of links. AI Mode, added in March 2025, gives a fuller answer with more links. Under the October change, contextual links appear more often and higher in AI-generated content, the link carousel under AI Overviews is expanding worldwide, and links at the end of summaries are made more prominent for people who want to dig deeper. Articles from sites a reader has marked as preferred sources also get priority.
Why publishers asked for this
When an answer gives you everything on the results page, fewer people click through. A Chartbeat-based figure cited in the reporting puts news publisher traffic from Google down 40% between July 2025 and July 2026. That number covers news publishers, not every site, and it is a reported estimate, not a promise about your own traffic. Still, it explains why publishers pressed Google to make the source links easier to find.
What it means for readers
For you as a reader, the habit to build is simple: when an AI answer matters — money, health, a purchase, a how-to that could break something — click the source link and read the original. AI summaries can miss context, and the source page shows who wrote it, when, and what evidence it gives. Preferred sources help too: mark the sites you trust, so their work surfaces first.
What it means for small sites
For a small site, clearer links are good news, but they are not a traffic guarantee. The work that still matters is the same: answer a real question well, in your own words, with sources a reader can check. A site that copies summaries or chases every trending keyword will not be saved by a higher link position. A site that earns repeat readers will benefit most when those readers mark it as preferred.
Higher links do not fix AI search on their own, but they give readers a shorter path back to the people who did the work. Use that path — click through when it counts.
