Google Connected Apps Platform: What It Means for Gemini and Search Users

Google announced its Connected Apps Platform on October 28, 2026, at its Android Developer Summit. It is a developer tool, not a new app you download. The idea is simple: instead of building a separate integration for Gemini and another for Search, a developer builds once and can appear in both.
What it does, in plain words
Today, an app that wants to work inside an AI assistant has to wire itself into each product separately. The Connected Apps Platform gives developers one route, with a console to register, test, and monitor the integration. Google says more than 50 Connected Apps are already available across the Gemini app and Search. Named examples in the reporting include Adobe, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Ticketmaster, with a Calm integration expected in the coming weeks.
What changes for you as a user
In practice, more of your everyday services could show up inside Gemini or Search without you opening each app first — booking a table, checking a delivery, pulling a file, from inside a conversation or a search. The platform preview opens to developers in phases over the coming months, so this will not all appear at once. Your own apps only gain these powers if their developers build the integration and you connect the service where asked.
What to watch before you connect anything
A connection is only as safe as the permissions behind it. When an app asks to connect to Gemini or Search, read what it can read and do on your behalf, and connect only the services you actually use. You can disconnect an app later if you stop using it — that habit matters more as integrations spread. A handy integration from a trusted service is useful; a connection granted and forgotten is not.
Why Google is doing this now
Google is in a race to make its AI assistant the place where tasks get done, not just where questions get answered. Its rivals are building the same bridges to third-party apps. A single platform makes it easier for developers to join, which in turn gives users more reasons to stay inside Gemini and Search. The winner will not be decided by one announcement — it will be decided by which integrations actually work well, month after month.
The Connected Apps Platform will not change your phone tomorrow. Over the next few months, watch for your favourite apps showing up inside Gemini and Search — and judge each connection on what it does for you, not on the fact that it exists.
